Very nice, I grafted over an ornamental to Orleans Reinette this past spring, it was rockin & rolling. Then I forgot to put screen around it (tree has been there for 5 years never touched) and naturally rabbits killed it this winter, hurray!!

Hey BV - At post #446 you put a pic of a "Homestead crab" that Turkey Creek grafted for you on B-118. What kind of fruit does a Homestead crab produce ??

@Bowsnbucks this video is in response to 'Stu' smsmith about the Homestead Crab and what taste it had. This specific tree grew at my house where i was born and moved out of around age 12. Oddly enough my inlaws live there now. Small world aint it?

BV - Is that tree a crab apple or could it be a regular apple that has smaller fruit due to lack of pruning & thinning of the fruit crop ?? In the video you said it was sweet with no tart taste to it. That's what made me wonder if it was actually a crab - crabs usually have a tartness / astringency to them. I'm far from an expert on such things, but was just wondering. Any more history on it ?? Whatever it is ............ it's a great looking tree !! That much fruit load in October and the apples look pretty good for no big-time care.

Yep, I'm personally attached/invested in that tree. I have 3 of its spawns growing in other locations, none are old enough yet to fruit. 1 specimen could potentially flower this year, if it does I sure hope it gets pollinated so I have a better understanding of what to expect fruit wise. Though if it only had 1 fruit it could potentially be bigger because no competition.

I call it a crab because its somewhere around 80-120 years old, it has a neighboring tree around the same age but the fruit on the other specimen is much larger and is gone by september/early oct. This tree has all uniformly the same size fruit I believe measured them before around 2 inches, so right in a decent size crabs wheel house. Its obviously withstood disease and all other critter to make it as old as it is and it still produces a decent crop for having its teeth kicked in for years.

The taste at least for me is great all things considered. I know wild life sure love 'em.

The Homestead crab looks like a winner. That video makes it look like a habitat dream. Still holding fruit at the right time of year.

If you're interested just pm me your address and i'll share the love. :)

Were your nursery trees grafted last year?

No all of these were grafted 2016. They range from 1 foot to 7 feet. Anaros crab is a painfully slow grower, I cut a 1/2 inch off just to make sure it was kicking, yep, its fine just wow, slow....
