1st rd done of grafting complete.

Well i went to my inlaws today, they have a pear that is just nasty. Its always really small, shriveled & pitted. Very healthy and productive but not edible.

I butchered it today, grafted 4 varieties to it. They were gonna cut it down so i asked if i could do this, if they take, then edible pears in 3-4 years.

I grafted Potomatic, Harrow Delight, Harrow Sweet, & Kalle (Clap) to it.

Sorry i forgot to take a full tree shot post butchering.

I left the middle main trunk and will cut it out next year as the grafts grow and need more light.

Good job BV. Much better than cutting it down and losing that root system.

Did some other field grafting at my house.

Converted my cleveland pear to potomatic, harrow sweet, & Kalle.

Well i planted 15 successful grafts out in the orchard today from this spring. I mentioned before i had a problem with my parafilm popping at the seems after 10 days, i feel this hindered my success this year which was really disappointing.

I have a shafer crab, liberty, nw greening, gravenstein, & a wetonka crab that will go into the nursery until next year along with the failed takes.

Here is what i planted today all on B118:

Otterson Crab (pictured below)
Egremont russett
Pumpkin sweet
Dayton
Haralson
Lord lambourne
Priscilla
Cowichan Crab
Nw greening
Hrens cat eye
Black limbertwig
Rubinette
Liberty
Brambley seedling
Dasyealyx Crab

Hey BV, That looks like way too easy digging. I think you need some good old Pa rocks in your sandbox to make you work up a sweat. :emoji_laughing::emoji_laughing:

Nice! It kicked my butt today, 15 holes doin it all yourself is work even with sand with a shovel.

So you bound your grafts with Parafilm only? No rubber band, no plumbers tape, etcc... ?
Luckily I tried doing just that with only a couple of grafts when I first started. No way it has enough longevity or strength to work where I live for a high success rate. I have to admit I used to use the plumbers tape on every graft and then seal it with wax or Parafilm if outdoors. However I have found the grafting rubber bands to work pretty slick on any outside grafts where what you are grafting to is pretty solid. Either T-buds or reworking a failed benchgraft root stock.

I had 85% success rate last year though, ahh well. Live & learn. Lol!

With Parafilm only?

Yep

With Parafilm only?

I've got a 100% with parafilm only but I only grafted 15. I do wrap the graft union with a sandwich bag as well but no other binding tape.
