1st rd done of grafting complete.

Every been over whelmed by the thought of planting trees in December? LOL!

So I'm going through my graft sheet to see what i had marked down as good to be transplanted in the new year. Oh my....

I'm looking at moving around 40 at this point. What kind of height do you guys measure for 'hey its time to replant this thing'? I have heights ranging from slow growing varieties around 8 inches to 36 inch tall whips. Do go by the caliper or what determines you moving the trees?

Its probably as time consuming as planting 500 plugs or something like that as you have to dig the hole, fill the bottom with compost, put the tree in, fill to the level desired, tube w/ aluminum window screen, put down black plastic and tree support rods, cover plastic w/ rock, drive in t-post, put up 5-6 feet cement wire mesh.

I'm already exhausted. ;)

I like planting 4-5 foot whips. Any that are only 8 inches I would let grow another year at home.

I was thinking of doing the cutt off at like 15 inches, but maybe I should let those go another year yet.

I still cut them back but I like mine to be about 4-5 prior to pruning back. I get a longer growing season then most so there may be differing view points.

What i've noticed so far is 2-3 feet is great growth on younger trees, i'm in 5B though.

I would consider moving if the graft looks solid and well healed. I moved one couple weeks ago that was a field graft. It grew little and the cleft graft looked fragile. It really needed another year but I wanted to put another tree in that location now. I ended up snapping the scion off while getting the ground cloth back onto it. So that one gets grafted for maybe the 4th time next year...

Damn. MORE apples?!

I've got an American Chestnut with your name on it if you'd like.

IME the thing that takes the longest is the screen/cages and placing/adjusting the plants. I can dig about 1 hole a minute. Dig them deep, then put a bit of compost in, then adjust after.

I've planted 100-200 (depending on how many make it after browse/winters the next few years... but overall somewhere around 150) of native browse/screening/pollinator stuff from seed and cuttings. It's work but, as I'm sure you know, it's fun.

25 more G.11 rootstocks ordered and mostly French cider variety scions ordered from GRIN. I faxed my order and emailed and it was very easy using the form on their site

Very cool. You have a lot more snow there. We barely have any. All my grafts are in their permanent homes as I plant them the year I graft them. Merry Christmas too all

Thought that name looked familiar. Just picked up a book from the library by Jacobsen called American Terroir. There is a chapter about New England cider that I might have to jump ahead to. Looks like he jumps around from the East coast to the West but not much about "flyover country". Oh well still might find something interesting.

My wife surprised with 1 more book that has been out of print for some time. Stephen Hayes suggested it in 1 of his videos.

Do either of you have lots of natural limbing on 'Winter Lane Crab' or 'Winter Wildlife Crab'?

I think i'll have to transplant soon as the ground is soft and my trees in my nursery are 50% silver.
