I noticed my chestnuts were starting to bloom today.
5 yr ols M111
8 yr. Old B118
13 yr. Old B118
I originally bought eight for the deer and wasn’t planning on pruning a crab Apple tree. My mistake, one of the best eating apples I’ve ever had. The ones I have all grow wider than they are...
I have around a dozen chestnut crabapples. Most on B118 a couple on M111 all very heavy producers. One of my favorite eating apples. Here's one for the deer I don't spray or prune. This
tree is 12 yrs. old.
Not to complicate things but one of the features of your sprayer is when the PTO is on and the valve lever is off (not spraying) the tank is agitating,
Those are speckled alder in the picture above. I planted 100- 2ft. uncaged bare root from Coldstream in 2012. The deer ate about half of them to my surprise. They did not achieve the cover I was looking for. Pictured below are American plum planted the same year as speckled alder .A little...

These are from Coldstream. Planted in mid Mi. about 12 yrs. ago. They are around 8 inches in diameter and I'm guessing 30- 40 ft. tall. They did not sucker much. I'm not real impressed with them. I will hinge cut all in the near future and replace with American Plum.
Temperature is the key. I bought 2 EZ Cloners and had horrible luck until I moved them out to my shop and kept temperature a constant 72 degrees. Changing rooting compounds to Clonex helped improve success rate also. I believe temperature is the key regardless of what growing medium is used.
Thanks, whitney, kerr, dologo, and chestnut in picture.I don't do alot of pruning on crabapples. My eating apples I do prune/train more like your describing.Your right not nearly as aesthetically pleasing but alot easier to spray and work on.
Planted in 2011 in clover. It got a little too much grass over the years and the deer didn't seem to be using it as much as when it was young. I sprayed this spring and lightly tilled and reseeded with clover.
