It is with great sadness I share that Chainsaw, A.K.A. Dave passed away yesterday after his battle with cancer. Dave was a friend and a mentor to me and I will forever miss him. Dave thought about deer and habitat 365 days a year. His passion is not duplucated by many. He resided on his...
Anyone get trees from them last year? I got some three years ago and they were the size of a pencil and very disappointing. I have a newbie I am getting into apples and I am willing to give them another shot if their stock has improved.
With some apparently against pop tarts I will start a thread of what gets packed for camp.
pop tarts
chef boyardee ravioli
orange peanut butter crackers
pretzels
cheeze it’s
mini snickers
ramen noodles with saltines
diet dew for mornings
gatorade grape for on stand
She has hunted with me every weekend since mid October except one. Sightings have been limited and I was worried she was loosing interest. Lucky for me she still thinks Dad is cool to hang out with. When Chainsaw invited us for a hunt we got very excited. Up at 4am, we made the drive up to be in...
Finally found the mystery cause of death for two of my trees. As my luck would have it was my best two growing trees. A wolf river, and Viola crab. Both trees had 36” of screen on them. The borer went behind the screen. This is the third tree I have lost to these bastards. How do I stop them.
Autumn Glory. I took a flyer on some at the grocery store. Wow. My new favorite apple. Looks like it is one of those apple trees you can’t buy yet but if you see some in the store give them a try.
By dumb luck I planted a Cortland Apple at my house before I got bit by the apple bug. This is the first year it has apples and I just tried one. Wow what a great apple. I don’t recall the Cortland getting much love on here and was wondering why. It is even rated zone 3. I don’t even recall...
I take back everything bad I said about my ML. I had a herd of about 7 move in behind my house this week. Busted them before I got out of my yard last night. Snuck out in the rain this morning. Got past 3 of them feeding in the neighbors yard 3 houses down. I curled around behind them and just...
I have a few 7 gallon bags with apple trees in them. I am going to trans plant next spring. Do I have to do anything special with them over winter. They are presently sitting up against my house in a mulch bed.
With one in the freezer I am hunting for a big boy the rest of the year. I have three studs that I believe are still bedding in a big swamp that borders my property. This swamp can not be accessed by humans. It is about .5 mile from my plots, thus the 1 hour after dark photos. I have two...
Not sure where we had this thread before but one of my favorites.
I will start. First time trying this. Back strap wrapped in bacon grilled on the egg. I am at 200 degrees and planning on 1.5-2 hours. Updates to follow

It seems every year at this time deer disappear from my plots. I always forget about Jewel weed. I have acres of it around me, it grows in every wet area. The browsing is unbelievable on it. Has anyone else experienced this. Could a common weed take over a deer's diet to the point plots are...
Any thoughts why this is happening? It happens every year on most of my old apples. The new growth comes out then just dies. The trees appear to be in good shape and this one is loaded with apples.
I am prepping for my trees this weekend. I have 25 7/16 B.118 rootstock coming. I am planting these direct in the field as an experiment. They are coming from cummins. How big of rootball will they have. Should I pre dig the holes with an excavater or will they be small enough to slip in with a...
yet another thread on did I kill my trees. I find it funny how we make this stuff harder than it needs to be. Anyways, I brought up some potted trees two weeks ago. I wanted to transport them before the buds started to swell. Unfortunately the ground was still frozen and I couldn't plant. I...
My Apple plans for this year just got changed. Cummins just informed me my 5 Kerr are no longer available even though I ordered them in August. Waiting for their explanation. My question is after touring my property this weekend it is clear the deer move out of my area when the snow comes...
I have a tree in my neighborhood still loaded with 2" apples. They have slowly been dropping for the last month. Can I still harvest some seeds from them or is it to late? We have had a few nights below 32 but nothing crazy yet, 8 being the lowest. I tried planting 100 seeds from them two years...
My new property has no road frontage and a 200 yard right of way. I am surrounded by state land on three sides and two non hunting neighbors on the other side. My right of way is state land on one side and one of the two neighbors on the other side. His land is the last lot on the road and is 5...
i am going to take advantage of this warm weather and start my hinging project tomorrow. Usually we are under snow by now but no snow yet and temps in the 50's tomorrow. I will be hinging for a bedding area. Two questions, for bedding how far up do I want to hinge? Second, for the purpose of...
