Winter rootstock availability?

My local orchard sells M111 but they often don't get it in until March and sometimes in late March. That is fine for normal grafting around here. I'd like to play around with grafting in the winter and starting the trees under lights in containers after the grafts have healed. Does anyone know a place that will deliver M111 in the middle of the winter (Early Jan)?

Thanks,

Jack

Most places won't have before early March because they are afraid it will have freeze damage in shipment, either from the wholesaler in Oregon/Washington to them or from them to you.

If you want at least 50, try Willamette. They'll ship before March 1 if you pay for air freight. Or by UPS ground if you agree they aren't responsible if it shows up damaged by freezing.

If you want less than 50, try Raintree.

Cummins does show it in stock. I'm guessing that is based on what they have ordered, not what is in their warehouse.

Thanks! 50 is more than I can handle. I sent Raintree and email to see if they can ship early.

Earliest they will ship is Feb. Any other suggestions?

If you want rootstock before everyone else starts grafting, the only suggestion for this year is to order 50 or 100 from whichever wholesaler will ship early. Willamette, Treeco, Copenhaven, etc. You should look at the pricing. If you normally pay more than $3, it'll be maybe half the price. You don't have to graft everything now.

Or order 1/8" caliper this spring and it will be the right size in Jan 2020.

Or start your own stool beds for grafting in 2021.

How many are you wanting?

How many are you wanting?

I was thinking of shooting for about 20 of them or so.

sure you could split an order of 50 with someone.

Most folks aren't going to want it that early. I may end up ordering 50. I'm still looking for options.

I think I have a few m111 and a few 118 but not enough to fulfill your needs.

Cummins will sell any quantitiy, from 1 on up. Unfortunately, they won't ship prior to the third week in March, so that won't help to much if you want them in January.

Burnt Ridge will ship early if you agree to wave the guaranty they normally provide. I'm just not sure how early however. You may want to shoot them an e-mail.

Thanks for thinking of me. I'm sure I'll work something out even if I have to order 50.

Thanks, I'll give them a try.

Well, I thought I had a hit with Burnt Ridge, but no luck. Their first response by email was "we have 15 in stock currently and can ship now". When I called, they told me the lady that responded didn't know what she was talking about and they were out.

It is looking like I might need to order 50 from a wholesaler. Last year, I grew a boat load of ACs from nuts. I ended up with way more than I could transplant into 3 gals. I planted some in the yard and gave a bunch to another forum member that is local. I plan to keep the ones I transplanted for a second growing season so they are in my cold room.

I collected a few nuts from my Dunstan's that are in cold stratification that I plan to start this winter. I have one Seguin that I started from a nut last year that survived. I may try to nut graft some scions from it to my Dunstan nuts just to see if I can. I had hoped to do more work with Sequins but I could find none anywhere. The few I had from the wildlife group caught some disease (from my apples likely) and died. They were not selling them this year.

A few years ago, I started playing with growing apples from seed and then grafting them over. The idea was to keep a few lower branches of the seedling and have the rest a grafted tree. If any of the seedlings produced good fruit, I would then use them for grafting. My thinking was that the genetic variety of seedling apples would have broader disease resistance than grafted varieties. Well, that was the plan, but it didn't work out great. Many of the seedlings were disease prone and got culled. Those that got planted did "ok" so far, but will likely produce full size trees and take a number of years to produce.

So, this year, I decided to focus more on using clonal rootstock. I ordered a bunch of DR scions from GRIN. I plan to try to get M111 rootstock. As soon as the scions come in, I hope to graft them. I'll then put them in my cold room for a couple weeks for the grafts to callus. I'll then pot them up in RB2s and put them under lights. I'll grow them out on my deck next summer and plant them in the field next fall. My hope is to maximize first year growth by giving them an early start and good care on my deck.

I'll do my normal field bark grafting of persimmons next spring. That is all I have planned right now but I may add more if opportunities arise.

Thanks,

Jack

Any more wholesalers you think might work? Willamette is out. Treco and Copenhaven only have 3/8". When I google wholesale clonal rootstock I get all kinds of junk, but none of the names you identified popped up. If you have any more wholesaler names I can checkout, I'd appreciate it.

Re:Seguinn

of 166 received from Schumacher in March,151 made it to RM18s in May.

48 survived to 1 gal RBII in October(range in height ~4-6 in)

They are now in garage for winter

Plan to transplant to 3 gal later in spring and ultimately to field winter dormancy 2019

Time will tell

Outstanding! You had much better luck with Schumacher than I did! You might see nuts when they are in the 3 gals. If so, I may hit you up for some next fall.

Cameron is another one. Lawyer's went out of business. I've only bought from Willamette and Treco

Depending on caliper, rootstock are bundled in 50s or 100s and they do not break bundles. Willamette will ship 50 if the size you want comes in 50s. Treco was a 100 min quantity for either bundle sizes.

Do you think 3/8" is too big? I'd rather have 1/4" for bench grafting but you'll be able to whip and tongue on 3/8" and at least line up well on one side. Cleft might be a little harder. I had my biggest trouble with some 1/2" M111 one year. Clefts made a huge wound I could not put enough pressure on to close up properly.

Perhaps not. My scions are coming from GRIN and in previous years many varieties have been quite small in diameter. Perhaps that is because I ordered late. I think I'd give the 3/8" a try. I just emailed Copenhaven to see if they can ship in Dec.

Thanks,

Jack
