So I have done some digging and again I am not a turkey person so if I sound stupid...well, it's because I am!
If I score my boys bird the way I read - it comes out to almost 67 (24.2 lbs, 9.5" beard, 1.25"/1.125" spurs).
I just am not sure what a "book" turkey scores..... I wasn't able to...
My boy was able to get one over the weekend. I am not a turkey hunter....I have enough bad habits as it is. First turkey off of our place. We have been seeing more and more of them but after chasing for a few years...he finally tracked one down.
Over the holiday weekend I saw first hand how the spring creeps north....at least to the midwest. We traveled by car from central Indiana, thru KY, TN and stopping in Atlanta. It just got greener and greener as we went....and got more and more depressing as we came north toward home....but...
Its far more difficult to tell without the leaves.... I thought it looked like walnut as well..... If it is a walnut it is big enough where you should find at least traces of the nuts and hulls around the base.
I always tell folks to mark the tree and then wait until it leafs out and try to...
My place grows black walnut like weeds. Great for timber...not so great for deer. I have had 2 timber harvests (both select cuts) thus far. The first was to remove a bunch of big "junk". My place was high graded a long time ago and the crap they left behind needed to go. So we...
Leave the tops unless you HAVE to remove them. They won't last nearly as long as you may think, and they help add some ground level cover while the understory responds to the increased sunlight. Dragging them around tends to only lead to damaging other trees. If you need to move some to...
I looked into and participate in some of those programs. Between those and when I had my timber cut was the biggest improvements in cover. I have a neighbor that planted trees in what was previously ag fields, but he is in the timber biz. That made some really nice cover for a...
I don't hold the bucks either way....I simply lack the cover needed to hold them. I find a small shed once in a while, but nothing to get excited over. Food is important, but food without cover just leads to night time activity. I would have to turn my 100 acres of tillable into...
With lots of folks eyeing the planting season I see lots of posts about ...."what should I plant?" The biggest thing I have learned over my time doing this is that....there is no one right answer. You have to plant what works for you and what meets your needs, budget , and equipment needs...
All I will say is that it can be difficult to get good results with corn...even if you do everything like the farmers do. Trying to adapt it like you are....I suspect the end result will be less than what you are looking for. If you need something for the vining plants to grow on....use sun...
I think many of us change our outlook as we progress in our journey..... as parents, as a spouse, as land manager/hunters, as people. What was once important may not be so much now, and what we once overlooked has now come front and center. Some of it comes from maturity, some of it comes...
You do, what works for YOU.
I say that because every situation is different. Your goals may be different. I have tried some things that some swear "will never work". I can plant 1/4 acre plots of soybeans and they mature to produce grain every year...without any fencing. My situation is...
I cash rent my tillable acres here in central IN. You won't touch ground in my area for under $200/acre and in some cases more...I "think" we are at $250/acre. That rate includes the use of a dryer/bin and a pole barn as well. I have roughly 100 tillable acres and yes we use a contract...
Voles I had issues with when I used mulch (I think the fact that it helped hold moisture drew them there)....ever since I switched to using gravel I have not had an issue. My fruit trees are out in the open and in places where I tend to keep things mowed fairly well.....this increases their...
#1 - not starting sooner (trees take time)
#2 - using big box store trees (not knowing the root stock is a bad thing)
#3 - cutting corners on protection (I lost some to the brush mower - deer will also reach over short cages and stunt your trees I use 5' tall cages now)
#4 - using mulch and not...
First of all - thank you all for your replies. I figured a few folks would be familiar with them.
I was under the impression that the laser would reach further. I typically bore sight when I can, but I thought the laser may be a better option....sounds like that isn't the case.
I wasn't...
Has any of you had much luck/use with the laser bore sight tools out there?
I got a new scope for my 22-250 and as such I have to change the rings and the like (tube changed from 1" to 30mm, and objective lens size increased as well). So that means having to re-zero the gun. With the...
