Should be fine. I've done both European and Asian pears on callery. I haven't needed tubes on callery rootstock personally. I haven't noticed a desire for bucks to rub callery but I suppose that could differ from place to place.
I use CalTopo maps to list my trees. I add markers for each tree and then write any notes I want. It's worked well for me. It only gets tricky if there are multiple grafts on a tree (or if it were hard to identify a tree in a mass planting).
I have a number of The Wildlife Group Pears planted in 2019. Frost took most of my pears this year. A few pear trees from various sources made it through only to get Pear Rust. Dr. Deer and Becton are the first pears to fruit for me. The pears from Dr. Deer were a touch bigger than marbles. I...
My initial thoughts were to focus on clearing some autumn olive and grafting persimmons, but thinking about it more now. I probably need to do some scouting to figure out why older bucks don't appear to be bedding on the property despite some of the "improvements" I've done.
General consensus that anything up to about 4" is a candidate. I don't have experience cutting larger ones but it might work to cut larger trees and graft root sprouts. Perhaps others can chime in on that though.
I got 100 seedlings from the Iowa DNR (also order different species from KY and KS DNR) planted in 2019 and another 25 from Coldstream a year or two ago. I've grafted Prok, Deer Magnet, 100-46 (Lehman's Delight), Barbara's Blush, NB-02 (Zima Khurma), a native variety, a variety named Big DV that...
This thread is quite old, but I was curious if you have an update on any of these varieties, Jack? I have a couple of them in pre-fruit. I was thinking of adding a couple others. You noted earlier about having Nikita's Gift as well. How has your Nikita's Gift turned out?
This is a question I wrestle with at my property. I've hunted one piece for 20 to 25 years that has lots of small open, sharp ridge tops with wooded sides. There are several smaller food plots. For several years we saw some good bucks. We then had a cedar harvest and things thickened up. We also...
It was a good time. He and his wife are very nice! I wish I had more of a chance to interact, but I wanted to keep it fun for my daughter who I took with me. That often meant going off away from the group and trying unripe persimmons she picked for me :). I was surprised at how good jujubes...
I just went to England's Orchard where he has a bunch to try. The American persimmons had a variety of tastes. To me, I tasted mostly mandarin-orange like flavor. Some tasted like brown sugar and cinnamon. Some tasted like pumpkin with notes of cinnamon. There's a few other flavors I'm sure but...
I picked my first AB early October last year. It was very hard, but otherwise not too bad. I didn't get any apples this year. What type of blackberries are you growing or recommend growing?
Nope I'm in KY. This isnt a great picture but I saw what i believe is the same buck 2 years ago. There was a different buck i saw about 6 or 7 years ago that had the same issue. The antler never hardened. It swung freely as the buck walked and always kept its velvet on that damaged side.
As mentioned, the estate pays tax on the step-up in value at the estate's choice of 1) time of death or 2) 6-months following. When the inheritor sells the land, they pay capital gains on the difference (sales price minus the land value following the step-up valuation) unless there's a 1031...
