    New Tractor

We had a few acres opened up around our cabin by a logger. I hired a guy to clean up the debris and take care of the stumps. He worked 1 day and then walked away. After my wife and I explored our options we decided to move up our plan of buying a tractor in 3 years to right now and clean it...

    Fruit Tree Spray Frequency

Imadan comes in a powder form. I partially fill my sprayer with water, add the Imadan and Captan, shake it up, and then add the rest of the water.

    Fruit Tree Spray Frequency

With Imadan I would wait till the flowers are done after pedal fall. Otherwise the Imadan will kill the bees and any other pollinators.

    Fruit Tree Spray Frequency

I spray Imidan for an insecticide and Captan for a fungicide. I try to do every 2 weeks after petal drop but sometimes I can’t make it to my property in a timely fashion. With my trees getting bigger it’s also getting more expensive and time consuming so I’m probably going to dial it back. It...

Worst few hours of my life

My son graduated from his lineman school on Friday. Ironically that was the 1 year anniversary of his crash. He’s doing great. Now he just needs to find a job 😀

    Raccoon trapping

I’m no expert. I bait with cat food or mini marshmallows. I sprinkle a little cheap imitation vanilla on each. The bears seem to like the mini marshmallows. I’ve walked up on them licking out the marshmallows.

Hunting / recreation and timberland values in your location?

That’s for sure but we will be paying it all off when we sell our home and move up there in 2-3 years so I’m not too concerned about it.

Hunting / recreation and timberland values in your location?

We bought our place in 2014 for $116,000. Our balloon loan was coming to an end so we are refinancing right now which included a new appraisal being done. This is in the northern Wisconsin forest zone and is not considered a deer hunting Mecca. We have an older 800 sq ft 2 bedroom house...

What is the Fix For This?

This will work the best and is most cost effective. I built this same type of road to cross swamp/standing water to get to the back of my property. I also had to put in a culvert as well. I picked up bundles of slab/waste wood from a local saw mill for cheap and then buried it under dirt...

    Maple syrup

Just got done bottling syrup from yesterday. Ended up with just shy of 2 1/2 gallons.

    Maple syrup

I first tapped last weekend. Should have done so way sooner but just didn’t have time with other obligations. Hoping to do another boil next weekend, weather looks like it should flow this week. Just cracked my first beer for this cooking session 😀.

    Maple syrup

My last year with my homemade evaporator. Next season we will be stepping up to a Smokey Lake Dauntless with a blower. Either a flat pan or a divided pan. Haven’t decided yet.

    Maple syrup

Collected last night and this morning. Mostly still frozen blocks from the cold snap earlier in the week where we got below zero. It ran a bit overnight. Trees really varied in what they put out. Started cooking the sap this morning.

    Birch syrup

I don’t have much experience with birch trees but we did tap a few a couple years ago to try it out. Size for tapping should be similar to maples. Their sugar content is much lower. If I remember right the stuff I found said usually around 80/1. The birches we tapped didn’t flow much during...

Wisconsin legislators author bill to reduce doe harvest in Northern Zone

Nope, you will be charged as wolves are listed as federally endangered. Nothing will change until the wolf and bear populations are brought under control. But the DNR has no interest in reducing either. Their new wolf plan doesn’t include a population cap and it takes over 10 years to get...

    Slashing pile

Depending on your budget you could look at having the piles mulched with a forestry mulcher. We just did some logging to open up some areas around our house. About 2 1/2 acres. I didn’t feel comfortable burning all the debris so I’m having it mulched with the stumps pulled and buried and then...
