Golden Hornet Crab

MM111 would be a larger tree and relatively slow to fruit so it shouldn't need to be staked. But nothing wrong with staking a young tree for a while.

That was what I thought but I am no expert and thought maybe I was missing something. I think he referred to them as dwarf trees that needed to be staked on the other site. No issue with staking early but was hoping for the larger tree eventually. Receipt says Golden Hornet MM111, so hopefully the guy is confused.

When I talked to Bill a couple weeks ago he didn't think they would have any GH and he told me they didn't make the best wildlife tree because they were so brittle and a dwarf tree.I don't know anything about rootstock

Interesting. I wonder what the brittle is about? I Have never heard a tree referred to as brittle before. I have seen some pictures of GH and thought they were generally a larger tree. Information seems to be kind of all over the place on them though. I guess time will tell. I might have to rethink where I plant them. I will probably go with a known tree/rootstock in locations I don't want a disappointment, these are starting to sound like a wildcard .

I have many trees on MM111 and none need to be staked. I can't see that GH would be any different. Since I'm getting 6 of them, I'm going to plant 2 extra deep to see if they will root above the graft and make full sized trees. I did that this spring for the first time in my life on two other trees I set. It's supposed to work, but if it doesn't work and the experiment goes south I don't care.

I would call, verify with someone that knows what the rootstock is & see if its not m111. If its dwarfing, id cancel my order.

Grab a few rootstock online get some gh scion from some one here, wham bam you just saved a ton of cash and got more trees.

MM111 is what almost all my trees are on and none are trees that need to be staked. I didn't think about planting below the graft, heard about it but have never tried it.

I was assuming Golden Hornets were the size of the trees pictured on page 1 of this thread when mature. Definitely not dwarf trees. The brittle comment is concerning for sure.

They are that size because of the stock they are grafted too. Thats not a natural occurrence.

I posted a question on GH on a facebook fruit page. Response from someone in Wis. was that is is one of the best apple trees for deer. He says one of his clients is always looking for it. Probably good for my area of the zone3-4 junction. Tomorrow night may be the test.

I should have asked him but I didn't get to talk to him monday.I wonder if it's the graft he's talking about since they were concerned about having to cancel the orders due to grafts not taking is what I thought he said.Don't know I think they will be a cool tree even if they are small

Bur - Are you expecting real cold weather ?? ( post #82 ) If so, how bad ??

I am going up tomorrow to check on mine. We have had an insignificant winter so far. Couple days -10 to -15 that is it. We have had a lot of snow but enough warm spells to melt it down. We are at 1' now but looks like we could get to bare ground next week. That is very rare for January but would make two years in a row. I have high hopes for this tree beacuase of bloom time. Cummins wouldn't guess on a zone rating but because of its origins wouldn't be surprised if it handled zone 3-4.

-28, huh ?? My turtle would be so far back in my shell, I'd have a tail !!

^^^^^^ ??????? No sound. Haven't a clue !!

BV - OK ........ got it now !! I was expecting some humorous video/recording.

I don't know about over by sandbur (35ish miles ESE of me), but the low at my house was -28 this morning.
Stu is supposed to be in a warmer climate, but he has beat me all winter. -22 here. I heard northern Mn made -47 and I don't think that was wind chill.

It's been a weird winter here. I left home one day during our first cold spell in December. It was -26 on the house thermometer and the same on the truck thermometer. By the the time I got to the top of the big hill on 27 it was "only" -23 and when I got to LP it was -19.

I believe we've had about 7 days of -25 to -28 this winter. That's enough

Had enough of global warming?

Local weather reports say 40's and 50's for the next couple weeks here. They call for the next " cold " weather to be around the beginning of February. For January, that's crazy !! Buds on the pear tree in my back yard are swelling. Not close to opening, but definitely lots more swollen than they usually are for Jan. 16th.
