Rain rain rain ..my river bottoms dirt panned last year are finally looking not so hurtful !
The food plot portions are heavy Cereal Rye with good mass/heads 4+' tall along with 4 clovers and a bit of Wheat and remnant brassicas
This spring's no-till planting will be the Green Cover Summer...
I will be ready in the next few days to plant 3AC of CP42 pollinator mix ..Welter Seed mixed 10 lbs per AC w/5 lbs of live seed and 5 lbs dried rice hulls pre-mixed ..calling for 1/4" planting depth and surprisingly out of the large hopper
43 varieties of flowering plants ..summer long blooming...
Well our across the creek neighbor turned a dozer and excavator loose on his side and it is baby butt bare all the way to the county road ..he is a farmer and strictly looking for row crop production and no hard feelings on my part
However a big, tall and successful screen is severely needed so...
Preparing my final plans and had the Green Cover "Summer Browse Pressure Release" as my main summer plot seed but it does not appear to be in their lineup presently ...
Has anyone bought any this year?
I have emailed them with ?? about it being MIA awaiting an answer ..

So this spring will be my first spring drilling season into hopefully tall cereal rye ...I read turkey do not like tall thick standing cereal rye so .. what have you guys encountered as to turkey nests in rye?
This old plywwod n tin girl is soon to come down if she doesn't fall down first....we had her and her two sisters scattered on the farm ..started out 15 of our family's children (no only 3 for me) in these old gals ..
Now there are two fancy factory one's about 100 yards on each side of her...
Well after 8 to 10 hours daily of temps 3 days in a row down to 24, 26 & 28.. so far the brassicas seem to just have a little "leaf tip burn" and not in all places ..
That has to be either wind or more likely the cold came so fast the ground warmth saved the day ...I hope ..as main rifle...
So looking ahead to spring 2024 ..my first "planned" use of the above named mixes ..I have questions
How much/good is the thatch that these summer plots ultimately produce?
Do you "supplement" either mix with additional seed ?
Do you "setback" in some way your summer release as you plant your...
This field is my first use of my 3PT606NT and picture was taken today ...the thing I was curios about was I did not think my Cereal rye which I broadcast after the brassicas popped up were not performing so a week or ten days ago I drove thru this standing plot my UTV with seeder in action...
Like every one else ..dry dry dry with a few little wet times between .. drilled brasicas, clovers and wheat in MayJuly ..once the brassicas jumped out I broadcast 100# AC cereal rye .. the brassicas have done well ..the clovers are sparse ..the wheat so so and the cereal rye seems almost a no...
In the vein of why re-invent the wheel..And for this coming spring I need some direction on hiding a Muddy blind on a 5' tower that is 30 yards out from a tree line setting just inside CRP ground bordering plot grounds ...
I am looking for tall cover that I can walk behind going in and would...
considering the lack of rain I think it will be OK once fall rains start (crossed fingers) ..the brassicas are jumping pretty good and the groundhog radishes are going to town ..finally seeing the 3 clovers making headway (crimson, frosty & balansa) ..chicory is doing well as is the light...
I have two more shots at use of my new used drill this year .. one is the first of October when our logger pulls out of one of my main woods kill zones which is a long acre and three quarter woods ridge top..
I am trying to decide what to plant as it is a long sloping ridge about 40 yards...
A big thanks to everyone who contributed thoughts to the adjustable lift arms thread as I have made the move ..I just ordered a green pair of class II Pat's Quick Hitch ..
I settled on the Pat's system for several reasons ..the main one being with Pat's there is no frame in the way while...
My JD 5045E has solid lift arms .. my old Kobota had lift arms that would allow about 4” of travel in or out length wise movement of the “eye” sure made hooking up lots easier in one man hookups …
Anyone have or seen such a critter for the “E” series of John Deere

Well a week ago Saturday I finished planting (into bare dirt from dirt pan work) my fall plots of Brassicas, Legumes and a bit of oats ...
Yesterday we put up a new Muddy Blind and as I passed the plots there was wonderful green stripes as far as the eye could see in the press wheel valleys ...
After two hard days of planting and just making the barn before the storm hit ...I went back to the farm today to open the seed gates. vacuum out the seed boxes ..blow off and wipe down the machine and check chains etc. since this was my first run with this new to me used 3P606NT ..
During my...
First severe drought then 10" of rain in 7 days with floods that are just now dry enough to plant so we are planting yesterday and today our fall covers, brassicas and legumes to be followed with cereal rye in a few weeks ..
New to me a used 3P606NT drill to learn up on (and how!) so what...
For those who may not have had the opportunity or thought about serious fertilizer applications read on as it is absolutely the cheapest way to have your plots and habitat projects successful .....you can have all the best equipment, seeds, lime, timing rain and luck in the world but no plant...
OK ..this is not a bash a seed dealer post but asking for honest thoughts ..so to set the stage ..we had river damaged bottoms that the dirt pan folks finally got to this summer but did not finish until June 20 ..we immediately planted rye grass and wheat soy beans ..and of course did not...
